Learning to Read and Write Kanji Row 17

As with other posts in this series, this is the results of a test I took today, June 23, 2021.

kanji test row 17

空 高 読 白 糸 石 親 貝 力 町 客 王 近 虫 音 実 室 文 夕 玉 草 正 水 立 説

This row is different from the rest in that it is row 17, the row I added myself to the lesson. Rows 1-16 are from MIT Japanese OCW (21f.501-21f.503) from ~2005 as are row 18-21. Row 17 I created based on the fact that MIT Japanese OCW neglected Grade 1 and Grade 2 kanji that are 1) easier than the ones they put in row 2 and 3, and 2) are expected to be understood at a very early age. Why did MIT deprioritize these kanji? Look at the kanji they prioritized. 説 is theory, a grade 4 kanji. 痛 is pain, a grade 6 kanji. 忘 is forget, a grade 6 kanji. 閉 is closed, a grade 6 kanji. 杯 is counter for cupfuls, a grade 8 kanji. 忙 is busy, a grade 8 kanji. So why do I consider this done even though I didn't do all the kanji? A bug in my software made it so that I missed the two kanji I didn't draw. They are easy enough that I'm moving on rather than spending another day on this row. I did pretty well on this test with minor mistakes on 読 and 室. I'm close to getting 室 right. One day. I mirrored 虫 probably because of 足 and 使. Probably 使 because 虫 is what I think about when I try to draw 使. It's apparently not as good as it would be if they were the same direction. Then again is there a kanji that looks like 虫 mirrored? No, that would be silly, so I count it as a good draw. That means I got 22/23 so 96% on this test (we are counting 読 as correct, 室 as incorrect, 虫 and 音 as correct, and 糸 and 石 are not counted). So that's that.

Since nothing much has changed since yesterday (the day I wrote my last blog post), I think I'll keep this short..

My favorite streamer continues to spread inaccurate information about masks and lockdowns. So here's my chance to provide some information... On masks: CDC Brief on Masks which explains the evidence that masks work. A reputable source on lockdown effects. If you have opinions on masks, lockdowns, or vaccines that do not match the advice widely given: get vaccinated, wash your hands, and wear a mask, please do your community a favor and look it up. Don't let your information about the world come from one source. Misinformation is widespread in 2021 and it isn't doing you a favor. They prey on your biases, so bite into the bitter medicine.

Until next time!

I'll hopefully post all tests as I pass them. Wish me luck.
